Dr. Mohamed Gaber Abu Ali’s Visit to the U.S. 12/1/2009- 12/4/2009

Prof. Dr. Mohamed Gaber Abu Ali Head of the Mission Sector and Cultural Representation, Ministry of Higher Education visited Virginia Tech University from 12/1/2009 to 12/2/2009 to follow up on the cooperation project between Virginia Tech University and Alexandria University.  Dr. Mohamed Gaber Abu Ali also met with the vice president and the dean of the college of Engineering, the chairs of other departments of the university and Egyptian students who study in Virginia Tech.  After his visit to Virginia Tech, Dr. Mohamed Gaber Abu Ali visited the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau in Washington from 12/3/2009 to 12/4/2009 and met with an American scientific delegation and a delegation from ESANA.

Egyptian Students and Community Party 11/7/2009

The Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau in cooperation with the Egyptian American Cultural Association organized a youth party for Egyptian students and the Egyptian community in the metropolitan area.  The Blue Nile dance group performed several cultural dances including the horse dance.  Everyone enjoyed the party because it encouraged the communication between students and the community.

Arabic Classes for Children 10/31/2009

On Saturday 10/31/2009, the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau started the first session of Arabic classes for children.  Their ages are between 6 and 15 and they are learning first grade curricula.

 “Egyptian American Art Exchange Program”

On Wednesday 10/28/2009 Dr. Maha Kamel the Director of the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau organized a video conference between the coordinators of the “Egyptian American Art Exchange Program”.  Dr. Ola Lawrence and a group of Art teachers attended from the Egyptian side.  Attendants from the American side included Ms. Susan Owens, Ms. Betty McGinnis and a group of Art and Language teachers from Arundel County schools.  Dr. Maha Kamel stressed on the importance of the project in the advancement of Arts and cultures in both countries and the attendants on both sides agreed on Egyptian American cooperation to develop the program.

Ambassador Nihad Zikry’s visit to the Cultural Office 10/26/2009- 10/27/20 

Ambassador Nihad Zikry, Deputy to the Minister for Foreign Affairs visited the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau in Washington to meet with representatives of the Egyptian community from the metropolitan area.  Dr. Maha Kamel arranged meetings at George Town University , the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian museum as well as the cultural section in the State Department.

“The Arabian Nights Film Festival 2009”

The Cultural Office participated in “The Arabian Nights Film Festival”.  The Egyptian movies that participated in the festival were “Hassan & Morcos” and “Fawzeya’s Secret Recipe”.  The two movies received several awards in different film festivals and the Egyptian and Arab audiences who attended the festival liked the movie choices.

“Political and Religious Authority Under the Mamluks” Lecture

The Cultural Office in cooperation with the American Research Center and the Egyptian Embassy arranged a lecture titled “Political and Religious Authority Under the Mamluks”.   Dr. Osama Abi-Mershed, Assistant Professor of History at Georgetown University presented the lecture and spoke about the circumstances that led to the rise of the Mamluks to power and also the social and constructional issues during their ruling.  The American audiences enjoyed the lecture.

The 6th of October Celebrations 10/1/2009

The Cultural Office anticipated in the celebration of the 6th of October besides the Defense Office.  The celebrations were held in the Egyptian Embassy in Washington.  Dr. Maha Kamel attended along with many defense attachés and generals from the Pentagon and people from the Egyptian community.  There was a presentation of historical photos of the event and the national songs.

Arabic Lessons at the Cultural Office in Washington

On Saturday 10/17/2009 the Cultural Office started teaching Arabic classes.  Arabic lessons are offered in both classical and colloquial Arabic with three different levels, beginners, intermediate and advanced.  The Cultural Office uses two books for these classes.  One of them is called “ Dardasha Egyptian Arabic” and the other one is called “Al Kitab” used for classical Arabic.

A Lecture about “Egypt in the Past, Present and Future” 10/16/2009

The Cultural Office in cooperation with the Egyptian Embassy organized a lecture for a group of Maryland residents.  The lecture covered Egypt’s ancient and modern history and the status of women in Egypt.  Following the lecture, pictures of famous touristic sites in Egypt were presented.

A Lecture and Iftar Party at the Cultural Office

On Friday the Cultural Office hosted an iftar party for members of the Egyptian community and students in Washington.  Dr. Othman Shinaishin attended and presented a lecture about the benefits of the blessed month of Ramadan.  The attendants enjoyed the lecture then gathered for iftar.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ramadan Dinner with the Egyptian Community of EACA  9/5/2009

Dr. Maha Kamel was invited to the dinner hosted by the Egyptian American Cultural Association (EACA) where people from the Egyptian community attended from Washington, Maryland and Virginia.  Dr. Maha Kamel wished the attendants a blessed and happy Ramadan and she spoke about the activities of the Cultural Office in the upcoming six months.

 

 

Launching The World Digital Library in the Library of Congress 9/15/2009

Dr. Maha Kamel represented Egypt in the opening ceremony for launching The World Digital Library in the Library of Congress.  Attendants at the ceremony included the president of the Library of Congress and the initiators of this project.  They presented the new website and discussed its benefits for students and the public.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“GLiMER Net” Videoconference Meeting

Dr. Maha Kamel the Director of the Cultural Office represented Egypt in the “GLiMER Net” videoconference meeting that was held on August 31, 2009.  There were also participants representing the United States, Italy, Mexico and Brazil.  The conference began with an introduction about “GLiMER Net” and its goals in developing scientific research and education then followed a lecture about the “Mediterranean Cultures”.

Educating American Youth about Egyptian History and Tourism in Egypt

On 8/26/2009 the Cultural Office hosted a group of young Americans who plan to visit Egypt and learn Arabic.  They enjoyed the lecture about ancient and present Egypt as well as touristic landmarks.

The meeting of Mr. Gamal Mubarak with the Egyptian Scientific Delegation

Dr. Maha Kamel invited the Egyptian Scientific Delegation and Mr. Gamal Mubarak for a meeting on August 18, 2009. The delegation consisted of Dr. Moustafa Al-Sayed Director of the Julius Brown Research Center, Dr. Lotfy Griesh President of Egyptian American Scientists Association, Dr. Zakeya Al-Kafafy Head of the Material Research Division in the National Science Foundation, and Dr. Ayman Adheir CEO of Global Tech. The meeting was productive as they discussed Egyptian American future cooperation in scientific research.

 “Know Egypt” 8/18/2009

The Cultural Office organized a cultural evening for members of the Egyptian American community who visited from New York and New Jersey.  They watched documentaries about Egyptian touristic cities and landmarks.  They also enjoyed watching movies about the history of Ancient Egyptians.

The Youth Exchange and Study Program  August 10,2009

The Cultural Office hosted 50 Egyptian students who are participants of the cultural exchange program.  The students arrived from Egypt to spend a year in American high schools.  Dr. Maha Kamel reminded the students about the importance of representing Egypt in the U.S. through organizing a day in their schools about Egyptian civilization and culture.  Presents were handed out to the host families of the students

A lecture in Rosslyn Rotary Club

On Tuesday 7/28/2009 Dr. Maha Kamel presented a lecture in the Rotary Club of Rosslyn titled “Egyptian Women’s Role in Technological Development”.  Dr. Maha discussed different aspects of Egyptian women’s cooperation in moving forward towards a technologically advanced Egyptian society.  The audiences who are interested in Egypt enjoyed the lecture.

 

Cooperation with Technology Schools in Egypt

On 7/21/2009 Dr. Jack Bermingham President of Highline Community College and Kathleen Hasselbald the Director of International Programs and Grants in Highline Community College visited the Cultural Office.  Dr. Bermingham and Ms. Hasselbald are the coordinators of the project “Advanced Technical Schools in Egypt”.  They presented a summary of how the project will be applied towards the students and teachers who are coming from Egypt in the middle of August, 2009 to participate in the program.  Eight Egyptian teachers will participate in the program this year and their program includes language training, analytical studies of the American society and curriculum designing depending on the demands of society.  240 students will participate this year and their program is sponsored by Fulbright.  It includes language training and students will be divided among 30 different Community Colleges.

 

The Semi Annual Meeting of the Egyptian Students Association in North America (ESANA)

On July 18, 2009 ECEB participated in the ESANA meeting that was held in Canada through video conference.  Issues concerning ESANA students were discussed and Dr. Maha Kamel expressed her happiness for the students who received their PhD degrees in different majors.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

National Egypt Day Celebration 7/15/2009

ECEB participated in the National Egypt Day celebration held at the Egyptian Embassy.  Attendants included many American university professors who cooperate with ECEB, representatives from the scientific institutions such as the NSF and NIH and different groups who belong to the Egyptian community in the Washington DC area

 

Cooperation between ECEB and the Egyptian Cultural Ministry 7/14/2009

ECEB hosted Mr. Mohamed Abdel Dayem, the event manager visiting from the Egyptian Cultural Ministry as a participant in the Kennedy Center International Arts Management Programs.  These programs were found by Mr. Michael Kaiser, president of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.  They sponsor students who are in the field of Arts and Humanities and they organize workshops in a variety of Art related activities.

YES State Department Program

On Thursday 7/2/2009, ECEB hosted 40 Egyptian students who were part of the Youth Exchange and Study Program which is sponsored by the State Department.  The students attended their final high school year in the U.S. The program advisors expressed their gratitude to ECEB and Dr. Maha Kamel for their support to the Egyptian students throughout different states during their stay in the U.S. 

 

A Lecture in the Library of Congress

On Wednesday 7/1/2009, Dr. Maha Kamel presented a lecture titled “Egyptian Women and Their Contribution to: Education, Labor, Economy and Social Life in Egypt”.  Dr. Kamel discussed different aspects of Egyptian women’s role in improving their society. Dr. Maha Kamel talked about the “Reading for All” program, “The Suzanne Mubarak Women’s International Peace Movement” and the role of the “National Council for Women” in improving and changing Egyptian society.  Dr. Maha Kamel also discussed the progress in women’s rights in Egypt.  The audience enjoyed the lecture.

 

Ein Shams University Committee

On Monday 6/29/2009 ECEB hosted a group of doctors who visited form Ein Shams University.  The physicians are participants of the cooperation project between the University of Maryland and Ein Shams University in the field of Public Health.  The doctors discussed their research projects and ECEB organized a tour for them in Washington DC.

The Egyptian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) Delegation

On Sunday 6/22/2009 ECEB along with The Egyptian (MCIT) hosted a meeting between university professors in the Washington area and the delegation from the (MCIT). Cooperation between American universities and Nile University were discussed. 

Dr. Vick’s Visit from Pittsburg University

On Wednesday 6/10/2009 Dr. Vick visited ECEB.  Dr. Maha Kamel followed up with Dr. Vick on his cooperation project and research with Mansoura University in the field of Psychiatry. 

The Peace Scholarship Program for Middle Eastern and North African Students
On Monday 5/18/2009, Dr. Maha Kamel and Dr. Mohamed Hamza attended the award ceremony that was held for Arab students who received Peace program scholarships.  The recipients included five Egyptian students who have been accepted into different universities including Arizona State University, Rochester Technology Institute, Colorado University, and the University of Santa Cruise.  The Head of the scholarship program thanked Dr. Maha Kamel for her cooperation and support she offers to the Program and the Egyptian students.

Cooperation with The American Research Center
On Friday 5/15/2009, the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau in cooperation with the American Research Center participated in an event organized to support Dr. Zahy Hawas’ visiting students who came from Egypt to visit Washington and to give lectures on Egyptian monuments.  The event was attended by Dr. Maha Kamel.  Both sides agreed to hold joint lectures, one about Cleopatra and the other about Dr. Hawas’ recent discoveries.

A Lecture in Reston Hospital  

On Thursday 5/14/2009, Dr. Maha Kamel presented a lecture about the advancement of laboratories in Egyptian universities.  The lecture was held in the department of Molecular Biology of the Reston Hospital in Virginia.

The Maryland International Children’s Day 

On Saturday 5/9/2009, the Cultural Office participated in the International Children’s Day for schools in the Washington, Virginia and Maryland area.  The event was organized by the International Maryland Center.  The event was attended by Michelle Fenty, Mayor Adrian Fenty’s wife.  Also attending were more than one thousand students and their families.  Students representing 19 different countries organized galleries showcasing pictures and handcrafts which reflect their cultural identities.  The students got the chance to write their names in Arabic and Hieroglyphics, followed by a session of answering questions by Dr. Hamza.

A Seminar on Higher Education in the United States 

On Tuesday 5/5/2009, Dr. Hamza the Cultural Attaché attended a seminar on Higher Education in the United States.  The seminar was directed by Mr. Alan Goodman , the President of the International Education Institute.  Among the attendants were Professors from the American Universities, Professors at the International Education Institute and Cultural attaches of different countries.  The attendants took part in discussions about statistics of foreign students studying in the U.S. and the number of American students abroad.  Discussions also included the impact of recession on the quality of education and the joint scholarship programs between the U.S. and other countries.

Internet 2 Meeting

On Wednesday April 29, 2009 Dr. Maha Kamel has attended the Internet 2 meetings in DC to follow up on the use of the Internet 2 in Science Education and on the role of distance learning in the universities.

International Day of Diplomats’ Wives

On Tuesday April 28, 2009, the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau participated in the annual gathering which was held in Washington DC.  Representatives of more than 25 countries participated as well.  The participating countries presented a variety of shows. Some Khan-El-Khalily products, handicrafts, and pictures that reflect the vividness of Egyptian cities were showcased.  The audience was mesmerized by the Tanura Dance which was performed by Mr. Mohamed Nayel.

“A Walk in Medieval Cairo”

On Thursday 4/23/2009, the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau invited Dr. Samir Gabriel, President of the American Research Center.  Dr. Gabriel gave a lecture entitled “A Walk in Medieval Cairo”, showing through the lecture some of the most important churches and mosques from that period of time.  The American Research Center has helped in many renovation projects of different churches and mosques. The American audience was fascinated with the photos

 

The Scientific Research Delegation’s Visit to Washington DC (April 11, 2009- April 18, 2009)
The Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau hosted the scientific research delegation, which included Prof. Dr. Ali Alshafey, president of Science and Technology. Developmental Fund; Prof. Dr. Tarek Hussein president of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology; Prof. Dr. Ayman Aldosuky, president of the National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Science; Prof. Dr. Mohamed Baha-Eldin Fayez professor at the Center of Metallurgical Research and Development Institute; Prof. Dr. Haneya Alatreby Professor at the Agricultural Research Center; Dr. Abeer Shekwir and Ms. Jilan Abd-Elgawad from the Science and Technology Developmental Fund.  Prof. Dr. Maha Mahmoud , the Director of the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau accompanied the delegation, attended the meetings of Science and Technology Joint Board and arranged for meetings with the funding agencies like National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health as well as a visit to the Science and Technology Office at the White House.

 

Examinations for Egyptian Students
The Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau organized Arabic exams for the Egyptian students staying in the U.S. The exams began on Saturday 4/11/2009 and lasted for 9 days.  The number of students who took the exams this year was fifty three students.

 

Egyptian Interreligious Dialogue Delegation Visits DC 4/2/2009

The delegation consisted of Dr. Fathy Abu Eyana former Vice President of Alexandria University, Ms. Amina Shafik the journalist in Alahram news paper, Dr. Nabil Samuel Abadir President of the Biblical Coptic Association for Social Services, Dr. Hanan Yousuf Professor at the Faculty of Education at Aim Shams University, and Ms. Samira Luqa Manager of the cultural development division in the Biblical Coptic Association.  The Roslyn Rotary Club represented the American side.

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Intercultural Dialogue between the Egyptian and American Students

On Thursday March 26, 2009 The Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau invited American college students in the Washington DC area to welcome a group of visiting Egyptian students who arrived  to Washington to spend two weeks visiting some US Universities. It was a great opportunity for both the Egyptian and American students to explore each others’ cultures through a facilitated dialogue.

 

 

Lecture on Presentation of Coptic Patriarchs in Arts

ECEB Organized a lecture entitled “Presentation of Coptic Patriarchs in Arts” on March 17th 2009.  The invited speaker was Prof. Dr. Gawdat Gabra who is a visiting professor at Claremont University and the former director of the Coptic museum.

 

Movie “An Artist from the East”

On Friday March 13th, 2009 ECEB hosted Mr. Ahmed Youssef the director of the movie “An Artist from the East” which describes the life of the great artist Mahmoud Said . Mr. Youssef answered the questions of the attendees after the movie.

Visit of some American Students and their Teachers to Egypt

On Friday March 13th , 2009 ECEB hosted a group of students, their teachers and their parents who will travel to Egypt as tourists in the first week of April. Dr. Maha Kamel highlighted some facts about the different Egyptian cities and talked about some important points that are of concern to the tourists.

Lecture to A Secondary School in Washington DC

On March 11th , 2009, Dr. Mohamed Hamza, gave a lecture on Egypt to the students of Charter Secondary schools in Washington DC.  The lecture included a movie that showed Egyptian touristic sites.  After that, Dr. Hamza had an open session to answer the questions raised by the students and finally Mr. Mohamed Nayel presented the Tanoura performance which fascinated the students and the teachers.

Third International Forum on Digital Humanities

On March 9th, 2009 Dr. Maha Kamel attended the “Third International Forum on Digital Humanities. Digital Libraries and Virtual Museums”. The discussion included sharing strategies as well as development of a plan for coordination between Egypt and the World Digital Library Initiative of the Library of Congress in Washington DC.

Kennedy Center Performances:

Dr. Maha Kamel and Dr. Mohamed Hamza attended two Egyptian performances during the Arabesque festival at Kennedy Center. The first performance was on March 4th , it was a contemporary dance by Ms. Karima Mansour and the second musical orchestra was on March 8th  which was presented by Pianist Fathy Salama and his orchestra .

Lecture to Senior Citizens in Kensington, Maryland

On February 27th 2009, Dr. Mohamed Hamza, gave a lecture on Egypt to a group of senior citizens in Kensington, Maryland. The lecture included a movie that showed touristic sites in some of the Egyptian cities. After that, Dr. Hamza had an open session to answer the questions raised.

Videoconference on Nanotechnology and Orthopedics:

Dr. Maha Kamel organized a videoconference on February 24th 2009. The conference was in collaboration with the World Bank and it was about Nanotechnology and Orthopedics, the future collaboration between both US and Egypt was discussed during the meeting.

Arabesque Festival at Kennedy Center:

On Monday February 23rd 2009, Dr. Maha Kamel and Dr. Mohamed Hamza attended the opening ceremony of the Arabesque festival at the Kennedy Center of Arts. The festival included a showcase of movies, galleries and shows from all Arabic countries.

 

Meeting and Lecture at the American Research Center:

Dr. Maha Kamel attended a meeting at the headquarters of the American Research Center ARC at John Hopkins University on February 20th, 2009. During the meeting, the forthcoming collaboration between the ARC and the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau were discussed. The program will start by inviting Dr. Zahi Hawas to give a series of lectures at ARC. Dr. Susan Oath gave a lecture on “Glass Manufacture in Ancient Egypt”


 

ECEB hosts girls scout from Virginia:

On Thursday February 19th 2009, the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau hosted a group of girls scout from Virginia who came to learn about the Egyptian culture. The event included a lecture given by Dr. Mohamed Hamza about Egypt and a movie about Egyptian landmarks and touristic cities.

 

ECEB participates in the International Day of Westland School, Maryland

The Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau participated in the International Day at Westland School in Maryland. A variety of Khan El Khaleely products, pictures and Egyptian handcrafts were displayed. Different brochures and printed materials on Egypt were distributed during the event.

 

Training of the Egyptian young physicians

As directed by H. E. Prof. Dr. Hany Helal the Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Maha Kamel reached an agreement with two professors in the field of high-risk pregnancy and psychiatry to present their experiences and recommendations, to improve health education, and to train young Egyptian physicians through the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau.

 

Meeting with the Egyptian Professors in the field of Roads and Transportation:

The Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau in Washington organized a meeting on January 13th, 2009 for the Egyptian professors who participated in the transportation conference which was held in Washington DC. The attendee approved the proposal to establish an Association for those who work in the field of Road and Transportation to strengthen the scientific collaboration with the Egyptian Universities and research institutes.

Lecture on the Ethics and Values in Ancient Egypt

The Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau hosted Dr. Aly Zohery on Thursday January 29, 2009. Dr. Zohery  who is the Founder of the World Assembly for Ethics and the Founder of Zohery Tours in Washington DC gave a lecture on The Ethics and Values in Ancient Egypt

 


Celebration of the Egyptian Corner Website

The Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau participated in the preparation of the Egyptian Corner and the celebration of launching the Egyptian Corner Website at the Baltimore City Hall. The Mayor of Baltimore attended the event.


The general assembly of the Egyptian Students Association in  North America:

The Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau in Washington hosted the general assembly of the Egyptian Students Association in North America (ESANA) on Feburary 7, 8th , 2009. The meeting was transmitted by videoconference to the sector of  Cultural Affairs at the Ministry of Higher Education. Prof.Dr. Mohamed Gaber Abou Ali, director of the sector opened the event by addressing the students and responding to their inquiries.

During this meeting, H.E. Ambassador Sameh Shoukry, Ambassador of Egypt to the US addressed the ESANA members also and talked about the US-Egypt relationships then answered the questions raised by the students. Prof.Dr. Maha Mahmoud, the Cultural Counselor in the US. and Prof.Dr. Nebal Eltanbouly , the Cultural Counselor in Canada discussed with ESANA members the role of the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureaus in the US and Canada and the problems facing the students abroad. During the meeting, the new ESANA board was elected.
